Pfizer has announced that they will begin offering Viagra, the generic version of Pfizer's blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug, on the NHS in the UK, as a private prescription service for men aged 18-64 who have a persistent erection for more than a few hours.
The decision follows the guidance from the European Medicines Agency and the European Medicines Agency in its review of the drug's safety and efficacy.
It is the first prescription service that will be offered on the NHS, following the recommendation from the MHRA.
The service will be launched in the United Kingdom from next month, where it will be offered on demand from pharmacies in other EU countries.
Viagra, which is also available on its own, will cost around £19.99, while Pfizer's brand-name product, Viagra Connect, will cost between £20.99 and £51.99, depending on your insurance copay.
Pfizer has also been making available Viagra Connect, with the drug available to men over the age of 18 to treat erectile dysfunction for up to 4 hours.
The drug is known as sildenafil citrate, and it is available to purchase from pharmacies in the United States, the UK, and in the European Union. It is sold under the brand name Viagra.
Pfizer's decision comes amid a growing concern about the safety of the drug, particularly as more men are seeking treatment.
"Pfizer has been working with local and regional regulatory bodies to address the concerns about the safety of sildenafil citrate," said Dr Helen Butler, the chief medical officer for Pfizer.
The drug, which contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, is designed to treat the condition of erectile dysfunction in men, which affects around 1.2 million men in the UK. The drug was originally approved for use by the FDA in 1998.
